Living in Bonn
Bonn – relaxed excellence
The former capital of Germany is a peaceful city on the banks of ‘Father Rhine’ with a small-town feeling, but with the infrastructure and international flair of a major metropolitan center.
This charming city on the shores of the Rhine river is the gateway to the romantic Middle Rhine Valley, a region dotted with castles and surrounded by the beautiful Siebengebirge, a landscape shaped by myths, sagas and fairy tales. Bonn with its baroque buildings and century-old history is nevertheless a modern, dynamic city with an exceptional international community. More than a dozen United Nations agencies and 170 international organizations, as well as numerous large international corporations call it home. Bonn is centrally located, and the airport hub Cologne/Bonn connects cheaply to all major European cities.
The University of Bonn is a major factor in making the city of Bonn an international one. Bonn is a student town, with the social life in cafés and beer gardens dominated by the city’s many students. Approximately 4.300 of these students are from abroad, and the University of Bonn has established exchange or international scholarship programs with more than 250 partners in 27 European countries and more than 50 partners outside Europe. The outstanding reputation in teaching and research, its friendliness and its unique location make Bonn an especially attractive place to study and live, so that many students decide to stay on or return later. The number of international guest professors that come to Bonn within programs of the Humboldt foundation or the German Research Foundation (DFG) is one of the highest in Germany.
