Research Focus

Our lab is studying the lipid metabolism in the brain, using the mouse as a model organism. We are focusing on lipid uptake, local metabolism and lipid function. We are especially interested in the role of glia cells for these processes.
Currently, a major goal is an elucidation of the lipid transport at brain barriers. Here, glia cells are engaged in specialized multicellular entities showing functional circuitry. A combination of genetic, biochemical, imaging and mass spectrometry tools are being used to identify the role of the involved cellular players and to elucidate the mechanisms by which specific lipids are selected to fulfill their biological role. Using in vitro, in situ and in vivo approaches we hope to identify the underlying fundamental functional and organizational principles.
