Financing your PhD
Financial support for doctoral students is typically provided by the research group of their supervisor, where the doctoral thesis is being conducted. Salaries may vary, and specific details should be discussed directly with the supervisor. Contracts are established in collaboration with the supervisor and the affiliated organization, such as a university, Max Planck Institute, or Helmholtz research institute. Further information on „How to finance your PhD“ can be found on the DAAD website.
Costs: Public universities in Germany typically do not impose tuition fees. Instead, students are required to pay a semester fee each term, which grants them a student identification card. This card serves as a pass for complimentary use of local public transportation and provides access to reduced admission fees at the dining hall and various amenities such as cinemas, theaters, swimming pools, museums, and more. Additionally, students have the option of accommodation in student halls of residence. Notably, there are no tuition fees for students enrolled in the Bonn International Graduate School of Neuroscience.
Transport: Students with a student ID can use public transportation, including buses, trams, and trains, free of charge throughout North Rhine-Westphalia. Further information for the student transit pass.
Until they receive their student ID, non-student employees can purchase a Deutschlandticket for local and regional public transport:
Housing & Living: Your expenses for housing and living in Bonn depend on your lifestyle and personal preferences. Please see here for an overview.
